Selo Cafe + Wine Bar sits comfortably on Hess Street, offering a neighborhood spot that bridges the gap between a casual cafe and a relaxed evening hangout. By day, it’s a place where locals come to enjoy thoughtfully made coffee and pastries in a cozy, unpretentious atmosphere. With an emphasis on quality, their coffee hits the mark consistently, complementing a menu highlighted by standout items like their breakfast sandwich and croissant bread pudding.

The vibe leans toward warm and inviting without being overly polished—perfect for a quiet morning or a slow afternoon catch-up. The space isn’t usually crowded during typical mid-day hours, giving visitors room to settle in with a book or laptop. As the afternoon rolls on, it transitions into a wine bar offering a carefully curated list paired with small snacks, catering well to those looking to unwind after work or meet up with friends in a mellow setting.

What makes Selo resonate locally is how it balances familiarity with thoughtful touches—the breakfast sandwich, in particular, draws repeat visits thanks to its crisp, toasty bread and well-layered flavors. The pastries rotate and sell out early, which suggests a steady flow of regulars who come in knowing they’ll often need to be prompt for the best picks.

This spot best serves those who appreciate attentive coffee craftsmanship alongside simple but distinctive food, as well as people who value a neighborhood atmosphere where the staff’s care is noticeable without being overbearing. Evenings here tend to attract a more social crowd, drawn by the wine offerings and the relaxed setting.

For anyone in Hamilton looking for a reliable café that skillfully morphs into a wine bar as the day winds down, Selo offers a quiet but lively corner to lean into whatever pace the day demands.

I’d been wanting to check out Selo for a while after hearing great things about their breakfast sandwich, but it ended up being just okay — not bad, just not as special as I was expecting. The place wasn’t busy when we went which was nice and relaxing, though our server still seemed bothered. That said, I’d still like to come back sometime in the evening to see if the experience is different — the space itself is cute, and I could see it being nice for a relaxed night out!

Consistently excellent coffee, beautiful wine list, lovely snacks, warm service, and cozy vibes. I’d sit here every day if I could. Thanks for being such a phenomenal neighbourhood spot xo

I first had come in with my sister a couple months ago, we were looking for a quiet place to eat a nice pastry and drink. We heard about Selo opening up and we’re so exited to try it because I live in the neighborhood. We got 2/3 of what we were looking for but only because they were so busy it was a tad bit noisy! Which is such a great sign, we must must must support our small businesses and I think during these times after Covid and with everyone still recovering and trying to pursue their dreams, it’s so nice to see the owner of Selo. The quality ingredients, the level of service and the attention to detail genuinely shows. My sister also was raving about their chai products and I consider her a cafe connoisseur! I only wish her and her team the best. Lastly, (since this is turning into a dissertation haha) I just really appreciate the kindness the owner showed me and my date the other day. I always want and have wanted to acknowledge kindness wherever I find it and as a member of the LGBTQ+, I felt so safe and comfortable in the cafe. The music is so on point at every point during my date I felt like I was in a hallmark movie lol. All in all to say, I will most definitely be back and recommending to everyone I meet till they get sick of me haha. So if you’ve made it this far into my review don’t hesitate, support this business and let’s keep Hess beautiful, accepting and thriving. Kind regards, Gabriel :) (below is a short clip of me and what I drank/ate with my sister recording me, as you can see I’m so happy)

Selo is one of those spots that just gets everything right. The coffee is on point and the food is next level, you can tell a lot of care goes into every dish. We had one of their breakfast sandwiches, and honestly, it blew us away. The bread was toasty, the flavors were spot on, and the whole thing just worked perfectly together. You know it’s good when you’re already planning your next visit halfway through eating. The team was so kind and welcoming, and the vibe is cozy without trying too hard. Totally worth the trip from Toronto, I can’t wait to go back!

This is my go-to spot whenever I’m in Hamilton, and I highly recommend it! I’m completely addicted to their breakfast sandwich. I usually order a vanilla latte, but I decided to try the mocha and it’s just as delicious. The overall vibe is super cozy and inviting. The staff are friendly, and you can really tell how much care goes into everything they do. I’ve noticed they now offer wine and snacks in the evenings, and I’m excited to try their new menu on my next visit. I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!

Popped in for a small bite and coffee with a friend. Mid-day on a sunday and there were lots of seats available. The staff were very friendly and quick with our drinks and food. The breakfast sandwich was a mix of savoury and sweet flavours (I think due to the tomato jam and/or the challah bread) so I might try something different next time. Overall really great vibes/atmosphere and I'll be back for sure to try another item from their menu.

Gorgeous space with the sweetest people working there! Of course the best coffee in the city as well! Wide array of food as well, the sandwiches that they’ve created so far are absolutely insane. New feature pastries and food almost every week!

This is our go to spot for coffee and recently for a little wine and nibble. We love the breakfast sandwich and last night our group enjoyed the roast beef sandwich, tuna crudo, Spanish tortilla, olives and focaccia. Everything is always top notch - service, quality of food and ambiance.
